### **Cult of the One: Naming Conventions**
The Cult of the One employs a distinct and highly symbolic naming system that reflects its esoteric ideology, hierarchical structure, and apocalyptic mythos. Unlike most galactic cultures, the Cult eschews traditional family surnames, believing them to be remnants of a corrupt and egocentric order. Instead, names are chosen (or bestowed) based on the individual's perceived essence, divine function, or role in the Cult's spiritual ecosystem.
This practice is more than aesthetic: it serves as both a ritual of transformation and a statement of submission to the will of the One. Names are masks of purpose rather than markers of heritage. To be named is to be seen by the divine. To lose a name is to shed the last trappings of the self.
Within the Cult, names act as theological affirmations, coded prophecies, or warnings. Some names are given at birth, while others are adopted during initiation rites, spiritual rebirth, or acts of martyrdom. The Cult recognizes naming as a form of sacred speech, an invocation that binds identity to cosmic truth.
In this way, the Cult’s naming system is a living doctrine: part prayer, part *liberation*.

### **Names of Meaning**
Most Cultists bear only a single name, either granted at birth (for those born into the Cult) or chosen ceremonially at the time of initiation. In the Cult of the One, this act is not simply a renaming, it is a cleansing. The adoption of a single name represents purification: the erasure of the self in service to a greater cosmic will.
> *"When the One speaks your name, your past is ash."* - from the Book of Severim
To take a single name is to reject bloodlines, civic obligations, and ego. You are no longer the child of your parents, the citizen of your world, or the heir to any dynasty. You become, instead, a vessel: defined not by lineage but by function, faith, and symbolism.
**Surnames**, in this theology, are dangerous. They are artifacts of the Old Order, symbols of governance, pride, class, and legacy. In most contexts, they are viewed with disdain, though a few are tolerated as marks of special status. When they appear, they tend to fall into one of three categories:
* **Outsider Integration**: Names like *Solan Khell* or *Janella Frost*, which either reflect a pre-existing identity or were imposed externally (e.g., by the Dominion).
* **Symbolic Bestowal**: Rare names like *Korvex Quietvine*, offered as poetic titles marking the individual as both apart and within.
* **Functional Distinction**: In a few rare cases, surnames are adopted internally to delineate a role that cannot be conveyed with a single word.
Even these names are viewed as temporary or liminal, destined to be shed once their usefulness ends.
A name within the Cult is not permanent. It is mutable: capable of being changed, stripped away, or transformed. A cultist who transcends their mortal role may abandon their name altogether, becoming known only by title (such as *The Mistress* or *The Prophet*). Others may lose their name in disgrace, becoming unnamed shadows within the Cult or cast out entirely.
To lose your name is not always a punishment. Sometimes, it is a sacrament.
> *“The self dies. The name remains. Until it, too, dies.”*
### **Naming Categories**
The names given within the Cult of the One are not chosen lightly. Each serves a doctrinal purpose, binding the bearer to the Cult’s mythos and worldview. They function as living scripture—uttered reminders of duty, sacrifice, or power. While individual names may appear gentle or poetic, they often carry a subversive or ironic weight within the Cult’s dark theology.
#### 1. **Nature Names**
Cultists are frequently named after plants, flowers, or trees. These names are rarely chosen for their gentleness: instead, they reflect a belief in survival, transformation, and beauty born from adversity. Nature is not passive in Cult theology; it is cunning, adaptive, and violent when provoked.
**These names are commonly found among:**
* Alchemists and horticulturalists who work with rare or dangerous flora
* Healers, medics, and poisoners (often roles that overlap)
* Spiritual manipulators and seers, who “cultivate” minds or destinies like soil
#### **Puritan / Virtue Names**
These names are doctrinally aspirational, moral reminders etched into the soul. Many are drawn from ancient religious traditions or inspired by lost faiths: Puritan, monastic, or apocalyptic in tone. They speak not just to virtue, but to internal struggle and a repressive form of spiritual self-discipline.
**These names are most often assigned to:**
* Recruits or converts undergoing reprogramming or spiritual refinement
* Missionaries, preachers, and manipulators of mass belief
* Martyrs and fanatics who embody specific ideals of suffering or purity
### **Notes on Crossovers and Hybrids**
While most Cultists fall into one of the above categories, there are rare hybrid names that blend the two traditions (e.g., *Thistlegrace*, *Ashenjoy*, or *Bloom*). These are either the result of long lineages within the Cult or experimental naming rituals meant to forge a new archetype. They often mark someone being watched—by the Cult or by the One itself.
### **Surnames and Exceptions**
While the vast majority of Cult members forsake surnames as relics of a bygone era, a handful of exceptions stand out: each loaded with symbolic and political meaning. Surnames within the Cult of the One are never casual; they mark transitional states, outsider status, or exceptional importance. They serve as both identity anchors and barriers, distinguishing the bearer from the collective anonymity the Cult prizes.
#### **Korvex Quietvine**
Korvex was granted the surname *Quietvine* upon his informal acceptance into the Cult. Unlike most Cultists who reject hereditary or civic surnames, this name is an intentional symbolic construct. *Quietvine* evokes the image of a creeping, silent plant - slowly entangling and exerting influence beneath the surface.
This surname serves a dual purpose: it places Korvex both within the Cult’s symbolic framework and distinctly apart from those who have fully shed surnames. It is an emblem of liminality: he is not fully one of the pure Cultist lineages, nor is he simply an outsider.
#### **Solan Khell**
Solan’s retention of the surname *Khell* is a notable deviation from Cult convention, and it speaks to his unique social and emotional position.
The respect afforded to Solan’s bond with Noa - his husband and his God - has granted him an exception to the no-surname rule. It is a testament to the deep, abiding love and respect Noa has for the man he committed himself to for eternity. Solan having a surname allows him to have an identity apart from Noa : making him not just Solan, Noa's consort. A mercy given by the God that became so enchanted by him.
In this way, *Khell* functions as both an anchor and a banner: a reminder of human origins within a faith that demands transcendence.
#### **Janella Frost**
Janella’s surname *Frost* was imposed by the Dominion, after the organization found her as an amnesiac that had just been the victim of an attempted murder. It is a symbol of administration, of an old order the Cult abhors. But, she has been allowed to keep it, in the same way her father Noa allowed Solan to keep his surname.
*Frost* evokes coldness, distance, and stasis, implying a frozen or suspended identity. It is a bureaucratic label, an official tool of segregation, but also a mantle Janella carries with complex pride and pain.
> *"Names are prisons. We give you new ones, so your soul may be free."*

### **Theological Meaning**
Naming is a sacred act within the Cult. It is often tied to rituals of rebirth, indoctrination, and loyalty to Noa, the divine leader. A name may be:
* **Given in a ritual** after a bloodletting, sacrifice, or personal transformation.
* **Revoked** if the member falls from grace or becomes more than a name can contain.
Some high-level cultists may discard even their first name, becoming a title, a symbol, or a myth in themselves. These beings are said to have "shed the skin of the self."
#### **The Shedding of Names**
When a cultist becomes something transcendent or wholly defined by their purpose, they abandon personal names entirely. This act is considered an ultimate gesture of devotion and alignment with the One's will.
**Example:**
* **The Mistress**: Solan Khell’s sister, known only by her title. She is the Cult's unrivaled master of alchemy. To name her would be to diminish her role, which now exists as function, force, and flame.
> *"She gave up her name when she began to shape life like clay. The One knows her, and that is enough."*
Other unnamed entities within the Cult may bear titles like:
* The Cradle
* The Mouth
* The Vessel
Each title reflects function over identity, faith over ego.
> *"When you are ready, you will no longer need a name. Only the One will know you."*
